Saint Peregrine Ministry

St. Peregrine Ministry is an outreach of our Parish family to address the needs of cancer patients. We hope to achieve this by connecting volunteer ministers who are cancer survivors, healthcare workers or others who can closely relate to people struggling with cancer. Few of life's many challenges have the devastating impact of the diagnosis of a cancer related illness. Our lives, our plans, our sense of security and even our faith can be instantly shaken upon the revelation that "it is cancer". This is precisely the time that our faith can provide us with the tools that we need to contend with the illness. The power of prayer, the comfort of hope and the trust that God will make all things well in His own way and time, are essential in coping with the many difficulties associated with the disease. Our volunteers are not trained counselors or therapists, but are willing to share their own stories and faith journeys involving their own illnesses or those of loved ones. In this sharing, we hope to comfort the sick by listening to their fears and concerns and sharing our experiences and perspectives in the spirit of compassion and love.

Currently, we have ministers who have experience with breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, leukemia, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, major surgery, loss of loved ones, successful cancer treatments, and who are healthcare workers in the area of oncology. New volunteers are constantly being recruited. It is a goal of the St. Peregrine Ministry to find a comparable match between volunteer minister and a cancer patient in need. It is our highest hope and prayer that those ministered to will ultimately become St. Peregrine volunteers.

For those who are not comfortable with having direct dialog with ministers, we will actively pray for them and extensively reach out to our entire parish family to offer prayer, in the name of St. Peregrine to those who wish to be included, or anonymous prayers will be offered if preferred.

The St. Peregrine Ministry will attempt to be a source of cancer related information for those in need by keeping current lists of web sites, written resources, support groups, government agencies, etc. These lists will be distributed to those in need and will be a source of information for our ministers in their work.

Volunteer Testimonials:

"I have lived with cancer for 20 years, and I only find answers in service to others."" - Deacon Frank Quinn

"Being diagnosed with cancer was a life-altering event.  Through the grace of God, there were some positive dimensions of my illness.  The uplifting experience of prayer and support by my family, friends and the Immaculate Conception Community was truly a gift.  To be able to bring this gift to others, is truly a blessing." - Jim Cavanagh

Cancer is limited ...
It cannot cripple love,
It cannot shatter hope,
It cannot corrode faith,
It cannot eat away peace,
It cannot destroy confidence,
It cannot shut out memories
It cannot silence courage,
It cannot invade the soul,
It cannot reduce eternal life,
It cannot quench the spirit,
It cannot lessen the power
of the Resurrection.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
