MATThew 25 is a Ministry that centers around the needs of the homeless in our community
and beyond. Many homeless find themselves on the streets or in makeshift shelters. Our
mission is to create soft sleeping mats that provide homeless people some comfort and relief
from the outside elements and lack of facilities. In doing so, we also strive to surround them
with the love of our Savior, Jesus Christ and provide reassurance that He is with them and will
provide for them.
There is a nationwide and international effort by churches and community groups to recycle
bags into usable mats. The mats have been provided to local street people and have also
been sent to Haiti and other third world countries following disasters. The mats are thick and
soft, waterproof and bug proof, and create a layer of insulation between a person and the cold
ground.
This program also benefits the environment. Every year more than 500 billion plastic bags
are used throughout the world. These eventually wind up in landfills or in the ocean where
they are extremely harmful to marine life.
Each 3’x6’ mat is created using 600-700 recycled plastic bags. We are collecting clean/dry
plastic grocery and store bags, newspaper sleeves, and store dress/garment bags.
Most importantly, we are looking for volunteers to help us in this Ministry. There are several
steps required to prepare the bags before weaving them into mats. This process can be done
during a group session at the church or in your spare time in your own home. It is the perfect
community service project for scout troops and students. It is an excellent opportunity to
volunteer as a family and set a good example for children to continue a lifetime of community
service. If you can volunteer a few hours a month, we continue to provide bedding for the
homeless, and in some small way, live the Gospel by providing for “the least of these”.
Both men and women, aged teen to senior, are needed to knit or crochet the mats. No
experience is required, and crochet instruction will be provided. Again, the mats can be made
in a social group setting or in the comfort of your home, in your spare time.
Please prayerfully consider signing up to help. This is an easy project for a very worthwhile
cause. Any part you play in the process will be greatly appreciated. For additional
